The Rescued Animal Story behind the Come From Away Musical

by | Sep 9, 2026

When 38 planes were diverted to Gander, Newfoundland following the events of September 11, thousands of stranded passengers suddenly found themselves far from home.

But they weren’t the only passengers who needed help.

Dogs, cats and even two rare bonobo apes were still aboard several grounded aircraft.

In this unforgettable conversation, Bonnie Harris of the Gander and Area SPCA shares the remarkable story of how she and a small team discovered and cared for 11 dogs, 9 cats and two bonobo apes stranded aboard 11 planes.

Bonnie takes us inside the cargo holds, where she climbed around luggage to reach frightened animals, provided food and water, replaced bedding and helped make sure they were safe until they could finally be removed from the aircraft.

You’ll hear the unforgettable stories of Ralphie the Cocker Spaniel puppy, a frightened dog reunited with its owner, a cat requiring seizure medication, two very unexpected bonobo passengers and the senior dog who recognized Bonnie simply by the sound of her voice.

Bonnie also shares how her story became connected to Come From Away and how the show’s supporters later helped raise more than $100,000 for the Gander and Area SPCA.

This is a beautiful reminder that even during unimaginable circumstances, compassion has a way of showing up.
